Annual Race Kicked off Frederick’s In the Streets, Hosted 450 Participants

FREDERICK, Md. —  On September 11, the Frederick Steeplechasers hosted the 39th running of the Market Street Mile, kicking off Celebrate Frederick’s In The Streets festival. This year’s race, spread across four heats (Women’s Mile, Youth Mile, Men’s Mile, and Family/Fun Mile) welcomed 450 participants. With support from the runners, volunteers, and sponsors, the event netted $8,029.48 for local nonprofit organizations and projects.

The race, as always, had some seriously fast runners. Jacqueline Gruendel of Clifton, VA took first place for the women with a time of 5:32; Chris Moen of Bethesda was the lead man with a 4:36; and Walker Mason of Hagerstown led the youth heat with a time of 5:25. While there is always some great competition, the race attracts casual runners and walkers as well in the untimed family/fun heat.

$500 of the proceeds benefited the Lincoln Elementary School Panther Running Club, which is managed by the Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club. The free after-school Panther Running Club introduces running to students in grades 2-5. The remainder of the proceeds, $7,529.48, went to City Youth Matrix (CYM). CYM provides access to after school enrichment programs by eliminating financial, transportation, and cultural barriers for Frederick area children.

“Market Street Mile’s mission is to put on a quality race while supporting Frederick area children in need. City Youth Matrix and the Panther program certainly fit the latter objective,” Lou King, race director for the Market Street Mile, said. Highlighting the race’s sponsors, King also added, “We couldn’t do this without our generous sponsors. This year we welcomed our new Premier Sponsor, Rehab2Perform. We’re so happy for their support.”

The Frederick Steeplechasers Running Club has been supporting the local running community since 1975. The four Signature Races hosted by the Steeplechasers in 2021 raised more than $63,000 for the wider Frederick community, reflecting the club’s commitment to making Frederick a better place for all its residents. See steeplechasers.org for more information about the Steeplechasers and frederickmarketstreetmile.com for details of the race, which will be next held on September 10, 2022.
