The 3rd Annual Ambassador’s 5K Challenge & 1-Mile Fun Run will be on Sunday, August 4th, 2019 at Watkins Park. The 5K begins at 8:00 AM and 1-Mile Fun Run begins at 9:00 AM. Fun for everyone with fresh air, beautiful Rails to Trails, historic downtown Mount Airy, fun kids’ activities including snow cones, face painting, petting zoo and bounce house. Beer garden, food vendors and breakfast by the VFW. All race participants receive custom medals that feature Mount Airy’s iconic Twin Arches. One hundred percent of proceeds go to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in honor of my father, Raul Yzaguirre, former U. S. Ambassador and long-time Mount Airy resident. My dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2001 and relinquished his role as ambassador in 2013 as a result of his increasing difficulty managing his tremors. He then underwent deep brain stimulation surgery that decreased his tremors. He’s had a number of health challenges including cancer, mobility and speech difficulties but continues to face each one with strength and dignity. Others are affected by this debilitating disease, including Mount Airy’s own former Councilman, Bob King. All 5K participants receive a chance to win a $200 Southwest Gift Card!
